Home For Sale | Great Barrier Island | Medlands Beach

While a few hundred hardy folk choose to make their permanent home in this small corner of the Hauraki Gulf, others simply enjoy blissful holidays here. Many have been coming since childhood, and a lucky few own land and property here.

Medlands Beach, on the northern side of the island, is arguably the best swimming and surf beach in the world. Fine white sand, crystal clear blue waters, few people, and nothing between you and South America. This is the edge of the South Pacific, with its abundance of seafood, and any number of water sports to enjoy. You can learn to ride the waves with the local surf school, visit local art and artesan galleries, or simply lie back on the sand with a good book. No supermarket, no banks, no night clubs – this is New Zealand the way it was 50 years ago. You can, however, get a very good flat white or delicious meal at a number of local cafes and restaurants. Travel by plane from Auckland takes just 30 minutes, or you can take the ferry and enjoy a leisurely 2.5 hour ride. Contact My Sky, Great Barrier Airlines, Fullers Ferries or Sealink.

The bach at 69 Sandhills Road, on the edge of Medlands Beach, is for sale. Frosty, as he’s known by the locals, is one of those who fell in love with the place as a boy, grew up and bought himself a piece of this paradise. He built a sturdy bach to live in over the summer months he would spend here. A boat builder by trade, he’s made sure the house will stand up to the coastal environment. It’s understated and comfortable, very spacious, with 2 double bedrooms, a 16 seater macrocarpa dining table, built-in seating around a woodburner in the lounge area, and a well laid out kitchen with gas cooker and oversized fridge. The bathroom is fitted out like the interior of a yacht, with slate tile flooring and impermeable wall lining, ideal for cleaning up after a day at the beach without tracking sand and seawater through the house. There’s a wide, curving deck with outdoor table for 18, and plenty of room in the back yard for tents, boats, kayaks and ball games. The basement garage can accommodate your car, a small boat and all your beach and fishing gear.
Life has moved on for Frosty and his commitments elsewhere dictate that the holiday home at Medlands Beach has to go.
